A bill to create Canadian Magnitsky legislation was introduced in October 2011 by MP Hon. Irwin Cotler: “BILL C-339: An Act to condemn corruption and impunity in Russia in the case and death of Sergei Magnitsky”. Unfortunately, despite Mr.Cotler’s public offers for the current government of Canada to take up the bill and reintroduce it as their own, no movement has occurred on this important legislation.
In February 2012, former Russian Deputy-Prime Minister and current democratic opposition leader, Boris Nemtsov, visited Ottawa where he urged Members of Parliament to adopt this “pro-Russian” legislation that would help safeguard the rights of all Russians. Still, the Canadian government has remained silent on this issue, opting instead to send a large trade delegation to Moscow on June 6th in order to improve relations with Vladimir Putin’s government.
